US hands over to Russia list of over 61,000 kids adopted by Americans
The US has for the first time handed over to Moscow a list of 61,625 Russian children that have been adopted by US parents in previous years. All those in the list were adopted officially, the Russian children’s ombudsman Pavel Astakhov told Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily. The list does not contain, however, those who live with American families and “do not have any status,” he added. Five such children have already been found who came to the US for medical treatment, to study or on holiday and remain in the country, he said. The exchange of this kind of information is likely to continue despite Russia having forbidden further adoptions by Americans.
